Warning: My friend told me to skip the first 15 episodes of One Piece and I regret it

Honestly, my buddy Mark was so sure about this. He said the East Blue saga was 'too slow' and that I should just watch a recap and start from the Arlong Park arc to save time. I listened to him and jumped in around episode 30. Ngl, I was so lost. I didn't care about Nami's backstory at all because I missed all the build-up with her and the crew. The big emotional moments in that arc just felt flat because I had zero connection to the characters. It completely ruined my first experience with the series. Now I'm going back to watch those early episodes anyway, but it's not the same. Has anyone else had a recommendation to skip parts of a show totally backfire?

Disagree, skipping filler saved me months.

Tbh skipping canon is always a bad move. You miss all the little moments that make you actually like the characters. Your friend gave you terrible advice.

Mark's a genius, skip the part where you learn who these people are and why you should care about them. Next he'll tell you to start a book at chapter ten and just guess what happened before. The whole point is the journey, not just getting to the big fights.
