A tech in Reno said he never replaces a control board without testing the thermistor first, I say swap the board and be done, who's wrong here?
I was at a parts counter in Reno picking up a bake element and overheard a guy tell the kid behind the counter that he has never once swapped a control board without ohming out the thermistor first, and that it saved him from eating the cost of a return on 6 jobs last year. I get it, boards are $180 to $250 and some suppliers charge a restocking fee, but standing there with a meter while a customer watches me feels like I'm billing them for my second guessing. Do you test every sensor before you pull a board, or do you just eat the occasional wrong call and keep moving?
That line about eating the cost of a return on 6 jobs got me. Reminds me of a guy I knew who kept a running list of every part he ever guessed wrong on and taped it inside his van door. Said it kept him honest, but honestly it just looked like a wall of shame to me.
