Dryer drum weld cracked on a busy Tuesday, had to rig a fix

I was at a rental property in Denver last month, doing a routine dryer vent cleaning when I noticed the drum weld had split right along the seam. The customer had a load of wet clothes waiting and the part was gonna take 3 days to ship. I ended up drilling small pilot holes on both sides of the crack and using stainless steel zip ties to pull it tight, then ran a bead of JB Weld over it. It held through 4 cycles while she waited for the replacement drum. Has anyone else tried a temporary fix like that on a cracked drum?

Well, you've got more nerve than me trying that fix with stainless zip ties. I had a similar situation with an old Kenmore a few years back and used a couple of hose clamps wrapped around the drum, but the noise was awful until the new part came in. Your method sounds pretty clever, though I'd be worried about the JB Weld flaking off into the clothes if it didn't cure just right. Glad it worked out for her.

Buddy of mine tried that once and ended up with blue lint everywhere.

Overreacting a bit, it's just a dryer not open heart surgery.
