Heads up on those new Samsung fridge ice makers

I was reading a service bulletin from last month and it said the failure rate on the 2023 models is over 40% in the first year. Found it buried in a tech forum thread. The main issue is a tiny plastic gear that strips out, and the whole assembly needs replacing. It's not just a bad batch, it's the whole design. I've already seen three this week with the same click-click noise before it dies. Has anyone found a good aftermarket part that holds up better, or are we stuck with the OEM?

Yeah that click is a dead giveaway lol. The OEM part is trash, it's the same weak gear. Found a metal gear kit online from some guy who 3D prints them. You have to take the whole assembly apart to swap it, but it's a permanent fix. Did one last month and it's still running quiet.

Oh man, that metal gear fix @murray.drew found is smart, but I worry about wear on the other plastic parts now. Putting a harder gear in might just move the weak point somewhere else, you know? It's a solid fix, but maybe not the last one you'll ever do.

Is it really that big a deal, @grantw32?
