I bought a cheap universal washer door lock from an online seller for $12. It failed after two weeks and cost me a callback plus a $90 replacement part.

Oh, that plastic hook design is just awful. I had the same exact failure on my old machine. What finally worked for me was getting the metal replacement latch assembly, the whole piece that bolts in. It was more like forty bucks, but it's been solid for three years now. Those cheap universal parts just don't hold up to the daily strain.

Ugh, did you get the one with the little plastic hook? Mine snapped clean off trying to open the door, left the latch stuck inside. Total nightmare.

Tell me about it, @josepha32. That plastic hook is a total design flaw. Mine snapped the same way, and I had to take the whole front panel off just to fish the broken piece out. Ended up going with the full metal latch too, which felt like overkill at the time. It's a pain to install, but you only have to do it once. Those plastic parts are just built to fail.
