I used to think those cheap multimeters from Harbor Freight were junk

But after my Fluke got left on a job in Tacoma, I grabbed a $7 one just to finish the day. It actually gave me a solid reading on a tricky intermittent short in a Samsung fridge that had me stumped. Now I keep one in my truck as a backup. Anyone else find a surprising use for a tool they wrote off?

My old boss in Phoenix swore by keeping a cheap meter in every van. The tool that gets the job done is the right one, even if it costs less. I get what blair_martin is saying about speed, but sometimes you just need a reading to confirm your hunch, not a full diagnostic suite. That seven dollar meter found the problem, and that's what pays the bills. I've learned not to judge a tool just by its price tag.

How much time did @blair_martin's Fluke actually save on a simple confirm, though?

My Fluke would've found that short faster.
