Learned a hard lesson about freezer coils in a walk-in at 2am

I was fixing a freezer at a diner in Cleveland last month, temp was dropping fast and the coils were caked with ice. Tried the usual defrost cycle but it wasnt cutting it so I grabbed a heat gun. Melted the ice fast but ended up warping a coil because I got too close. Now I always use a steamer for walk-in freezers instead, way gentler. Has anyone else messed up a coil with heat?

Man that heat gun story is rough, I feel your pain lol. Warped a coil once myself and it's the worst sinking feeling when you hear that metal pop.

Sympathy from me @christopher943, that coil sound is brutal.

Oh man, a heat gun? That's wild. I would've thought the same thing until I tried it on a project and instantly regretted it. Did you at least salvage the coil or was it a total loss?
