Old timer at the supply house called me out for using too much thread tape on gas fittings
This guy I've never seen before walked up while I was prepping a gas dryer hookup and said I was asking for trouble with all that tape. He told me anything past 3 wraps can flake off and clog the burner orifice, which I never even thought about. Has anyone else had a customer's gas appliance act up after a past repair that might've been from this?

Nah that old timer was right. I used to wrap tape like I was insulating a pipe for winter, like 8 or 9 wraps easy. Then I had a customer call me back a month later saying their gas stove wouldn't light right. Took the burner apart and sure enough there was a little piece of white tape stuck in the orifice. Now I do exactly 3 wraps past the threads, pull it tight, and call it good. Never had a call back since.

Oh man, that reminds me of something kinda dumb I did a few years back. I was helping a buddy swap out a water heater and I went totally overboard with the pipe dope on the gas line, like slathered it on thick. We got it all hooked up and everything seemed fine until he texted me a week later saying his garage smelled weird. Turns out the excess dope was actually dripping down and landing on the burner, cause a little smoldering smell every time it kicked on. I felt like an idiot scraping it all off and starting over.
