Pro tip: check the dryer vent before you charge the customer for a new heater
Last week I spent 45 minutes at a house in Mesa pulling apart a dryer, convinced the heating element was dead. Turns out a bird had built a nest in the outside vent, so the poor thing was just baking itself and tripping the safety. How many of you check the vent first, or do you also jump straight to the multimeter like me?
Check the vent before anything else. Nine times out of ten when a dryer won't heat, it's a clog or a crushed duct, not the element. Pull the hose off the back and stick your hand in there, if you feel lint packed like felt or bird junk, you found your problem. I keep a cheap vent brush on the truck for this exact reason, saves me from dragging the whole machine apart.
