That heat pump diagnosis I nearly screwed up in Nashville last month

I overheard a tech at the supply house saying he always checks the defrost board voltage first on those Trane units before looking at the compressor. I'd been chasing a no-heat call for 45 minutes before I remembered that, and sure enough it was a $15 board, not a $1200 compressor. Has anyone else had close calls from skipping the simple checks?

Haha yep! Learned that exact lesson on a Rheem last summer. Painful.

Oh man, that Rheem sound is the worst... I've been there too, literally felt that jolt go right through my fingers. Those screws on the access panel are just asking to be stripped, aren't they? Hope you didn't have to replace the whole unit like I almost did on mine.
