That time a fridge compressor locked up mid-install at 7 PM

Last month I got a call from a landlord in Sacramento, new fridge install for a tenant, simple job. Got there, pulled the old unit, hooked up the new one, and the compressor just hummed and clicked, locked rotor right out of the box. I yanked the power, checked the start relay and capacitor, both fine, so it was internal. Ended up hauling the 180 pound unit back to my van and leaving the old one in place until the dealer could swap it next morning. Has anyone else had a brand new compressor fail on day one, or am I just lucky? I'm trying to figure out if I should start bench testing every unit before I even lug it up stairs.

Damn, that's the same luck I get with everything new these days, nothing works right out of the box anymore.
