Three years of dishwasher callbacks finally made sense last Thursday

I've been chasing a leak on the same model of Whirlpool for ages, and last week in Tacoma I finally realized the door gasket was fine, but the sump housing had a hairline crack you could only see with a flashlight at the right angle. Took me three visits over 3 years to catch it, and the homeowner even asked if I was just guessing at parts. How many of you are carrying UV dye kits for these intermittent drips, or am I the only one who learned this the hard way?

You ever tried explaining to a homeowner that you need to come back a fourth time because you finally spotted a tiny crack? My buddy had a similar thing with a fridge line that only dripped when the house was warm enough, took him six months and two callbacks before he caught it with a cheap inspection mirror. He was so embarrassed he bought the homeowner a coffee maker just to smooth things over. These intermittent leaks are the worst, they hide until you're about to give up. UV dye would have saved him a lot of grief, but now he carries one of those little mirrors on every van.
