Warning: I fixed a weird dryer hum by checking the vent line from the outside first
Got a call last week for a dryer making a loud humming noise but not spinning. The owner was sure it was the motor or belt. I started inside like usual, pulled the drum, checked the idler pulley, everything looked okay. The motor would try to turn but just hummed. Instead of pulling the whole unit out right away, I walked outside to check the exterior vent cap. It was completely clogged with what looked like a bird's nest, packed solid. Cleared that out, went back inside, and the dryer started right up. The blocked vent created so much back pressure the motor couldn't turn the blower wheel. I wasted maybe 20 minutes inside when the real fix was a 5 minute job outside. Saved the customer a big labor charge for a motor they didn't need. Anyone else run into a simple outside vent issue causing what seemed like a major internal failure?

My old boss made us check the vent first after a job like this. We found a full lint plug in a rental unit, and @drew55 is right, it feels silly after you've already pulled the panel. That outside check is a real time saver.

Started inside like usual" is the part that gets you. That routine will burn time. Exterior vent check is now my first step for any no-spin complaint. It's the most common restriction point.

Honestly, @phoenix_grant34 is right, we all get stuck in our little routines. Tbh I'd probably be the guy still taking the motor apart while the bird family is having a party in the vent.
