Dropped a bag of surface finds on the trail near Flagstaff and spent 2 hours on my knees
I was hiking the Fatmans Loop trail outside Flagstaff last Saturday with a few pottery sherds and a chert flake I'd found in a wash, all loose in a ziplock that split open when I bent over. Two sherds cracked and I panicked and started picking through the dirt grain by grain, then flagged the whole spot on my phone and emailed a local archaeology group a photo instead of trying to glue anything. What do you all use to haul surface finds safely, small padded boxes or bubble wrap inside a hard case?
Wait, did the group actually tell you to glue them? Because that's usually the wrong move. Reassembling a broken sherd yourself can mess up the break edges, and archaeologists can learn a lot from how and where it cracked, so most of them would rather see the pieces separate and labeled. For hauling, a small hard plastic box with a folded paper towel or foam insert works better than a ziplock since it keeps things from sliding and banging together.
