I finally dug a test pit in my own backyard, 3 days wasted on the wrong spot

Last Saturday I spent 3 days digging a 4 foot test pit near my old oak tree after finding a musket ball at the surface, but the soil turned out to be modern fill from the 1960s. A neighbor who grew up here told me the house next door used to be a blacksmith shop, and the real artifacts are buried 15 feet east under the old alley line. Has anyone else had to redo a whole dig because of fill dirt or old property maps that don't match what's there now?
