Just lost $150 on a fake Roman coin from a sketchy online auction

I got excited about a listing for a 'genuine Roman denarius' with a clear portrait. The seller had good feedback, so I bid $150 and won. When it arrived, the metal felt wrong and the details looked soft under a magnifier. I took it to a local expert who confirmed it was a modern cast copy, basically worthless. Has anyone else been burned by fake artifacts online and know where to find legit sellers?

Honestly, check if the auction site itself has a verified antiquities program before you even look at seller feedback.

Totally agree with that. Those programs are the first line of defense. Seller feedback can be faked so easily, but a site's own verification actually means something. It shows they have real experts checking things. I'd never buy something old online without that stamp of approval first.

Check the seller's return policy first, like tara_patel said.
