Question about the Roman coin hoard found near my town that nobody can agree on
A guy from the local historical society spoke at our library on Saturday and mentioned a hoard of about 2,400 silver coins dug up near the river bank in 2019. He thinks it was buried in a hurry around 260 AD because of raids, but a researcher from the university says the coins were placed there on purpose over many trips. I sat there thinking about how two experts can look at the same dirt and see totally different stories. The odd part is the coins were found inside a broken pot with a dog skull sitting right on top of it. Nobody at the talk could explain the dog, and the guy just shrugged and moved to the next slide. Does anyone here know of other digs where animal bones turned up with a stash like that?
