Rant: my $220 trowel broke on day 2 of a dig near Abilene
Bought a fancy pointing trowel with a lifetime warranty for my first field school and the weld snapped clean off in hard clay. A guy in my trench handed me his $12 hardware store one and it outlasted mine the whole season. Anyone else had gear fall apart right when you finally get to use it?
That lifetime warranty is doing a lot of heavy lifting for a trowel that couldn't survive two days of Abilene clay. My guess is the warranty covers everything except the one thing you actually need it for, which is digging. I've watched a $10 Ace Hardware trowel out dig a $200 one before, it's like the expensive ones are built for photos on the website, not for actual dirt. The weld probably let go because some engineer decided a nice smooth joint looked better than one that holds. Meanwhile the guy next to you is out there with a bent up bargain tool still scraping out a floor level like it's nothing.
