Showerthought: my luckiest day digging was a washed out creek bank in Ohio
Last April I found a broken spear point and two flint flakes in about 20 minutes at a creek near Chillicothe after a storm cut the bank back, and I have not found anything close since, so what spots do you check after heavy rain?
Four brokes and a scraper out of two feet of gravel in one afternoon is nuts, I can't even picture that kind of day. Good call from @grantw32 on the ditch mouths too, I never thought about where the little side flows pile stuff up. Guess I've been wasting my time on the straight stretches when I should be hunting the outside bends the morning after.
My buddy Dave hit a spot like that two springs back on a feeder creek off the Scioto, where a bend had washed out under a sycamore root ball and left a shelf of gravel sticking out. He pulled four brokes and a scraper out of maybe two feet of that shelf in one afternoon. What he does now is skip the straight runs and look for outside bends where the water slows and drops its load, plus any spot where a side ditch dumps into the main creek. He also checks the fresh gravel bars on the inside of those bends, since the storm flips the rocks over and shows stuff that was buried. The window is short though, because one more good rain and the bank slumps back over it. Get out there the morning after, not a week later.
