Spent 4 hours trying to piece together a single clay pot in the lab...
It was a small vessel from a dig near Chaco Canyon, and I thought it would be a quick fix. The pieces looked simple, but the pattern was so repetitive I kept matching the wrong edges. My professor walked by and pointed out I had the base stuck to a rim fragment... anyone else ever get totally fooled by a simple artifact?

Sounds like that pot was gaslighting you. Four hours is a long time to be in a toxic relationship with some old clay. I have to respect the commitment though, staring at the same tiny pattern until your brain just gives up. The professor casually pointing out the base-on-rim situation is the perfect humble pie moment. At least you didn't glue it that way.

I used to think that was fine but now I see the base-on-rim thing is a total rookie move.

Oh man, @elizabethg85, that takes me back. My buddy Dave did the exact same thing with a big soup bowl he found. He spent a whole weekend piecing it together, super proud. Then his wife walks in, looks at it for two seconds, and just says "Honey, the base is on the rim." The look on his face was priceless. He had to take the whole thing apart and start over.
