Spent two seasons brushing dirt off pottery before a volunteer asked why I never wet the soil first
She said dampening the trench wall makes the paint on 4th century shards pop instead of crumbling, and I had been dry-brushing the whole time at our site outside Athens. Do you wet the dirt or keep it dry, and did anyone ever tell you which way was right?
