That 'Viking sword' I found in my uncle's shed actually turned out to be a legit find

I remember back in 2018, my uncle passed and I was cleaning out his shed in rural Minnesota. I found this rusty old sword blade wrapped in a tarp and figured it was some cheap replica he bought at a flea market. I almost tossed it in the scrap pile, but something about the shape looked a bit off, so I snapped a photo and sent it to a local archaeologist at the University of Minnesota. She took a quick look and said the tang and rivet holes matched early medieval patterns. Turns out, after a full analysis, it was a genuine 10th century Viking sword, probably traded down from the Great Lakes region. The thing had been sitting in that damp shed for maybe 40 years, totally overlooked. It ended up in a museum display near Duluth, and I still can't believe I nearly threw it away. Any of you ever had a garage or attic find that turned out way more important than you thought?

Holy crap, that's insane! I had a similar thing happen a couple years ago when my grandma passed. We were cleaning out her garage and found this dusty old fiddle case in the rafters. My cousin was gonna toss it, but I opened it up and there was this beat-up old violin with a weird label inside. I took it to a luthier in the city and he nearly flipped his lid, turns out it was a legit 18th century French violin worth like 20 grand. My grandma apparently played it as a kid in Quebec and nobody in the family had a clue. Still can't believe it was just sitting up there gathering dust.

It's wild how often stuff like this happens, right? Feels like there are hidden treasures just sitting around in plain sight everywhere - old coins in couch cushions, vintage cameras in thrift stores, rare books at garage sales. Makes you wonder what else is out there that nobody's even looked at twice.

@daniel_martin that violin story absolutely blew my mind. Eighteenth century French? Worth twenty grand? I can't get over how something that valuable was just sitting in a garage. It's like those stories where people find original Star Wars action figures in their attic or mint condition baseball cards in a shoebox under the bed. Makes me want to go through every dusty box my parents have stored away, even the ones that look like junk. The scary part is thinking about how many treasures probably got thrown out by mistake over the years.
