Vent: a retired teacher at a dig in Cortez showed me how she reads dirt layers, and I still think about it | Archaeology Discoveries - Babble Community
Man, those old school diggers have a gift. I did a field school in New Mexico and this one retired archaeologist would just squat down and read a wall like a book, pointing out old flood lines and ash layers I would have walked right past. What helped me most was asking her to talk through it out loud while I watched, then trying to call the layers myself before she said anything. You learn way faster when someone makes you guess first. Next time you run into her, ask if you can do a strat column together, it sticks way better than just watching.
