A random chat with a retired teacher changed how I see small talk

I was waiting for an oil change at the shop on Route 12 last Tuesday, and this older woman next to me just started talking. She said she spent 40 years teaching third grade and learned that kids remember you best for the weird, offhand comments you make, not the lessons. That hit me different because I always thought small talk was just filler, but she argued it is the real exchange of meaning (like how I remember a stranger once told me about a good truck stop in Ohio). Now I catch myself paying more attention to those quick conversations. Has anyone else had a random chat totally flip your view on something?

My buddy Mike was buying a used truck from this guy in Rutland last spring, and while they were waiting on the paperwork the guy's wife came out and started talking about how she used to drive a bread truck for Wonder back in the 80s. She told him all these stories about the routes and the regulars and how one time she found a lost dog and reunited it with a family three towns over. Mike said he sat there for almost an hour just listening to her, and now he always makes a point to chat up older folks at garage sales and such because you never know what kinda wild story they've got tucked away.

Man, that's awesome lol. @drew55 tell Mike he's doing the lord's work by just letting people talk. Some of the best stories come from random strangers if you just shut up and listen for a minute.

Right? And now Mike's probably out there getting a whole lecture on how vacuum tubes work from some guy at a flea market lmao. Old folks have this secret stash of the most random life stories you'd never believe. I swear half the population over 70 just has a mental library of tales they're dying to unload on anyone who makes eye contact. Next thing you know Mike's gonna be stuck at a car dealership for three hours because the finance guy's wife used to be a clown at a traveling circus or something dumb like that lol.
