Got asked 12 times last month why the sky over Reno looked hazy, and 11 people guessed wrong
I work the front counter at a bike shop in Reno and people kept asking about the gray-white haze sitting over the valley in late July. Almost everyone blamed wildfire smoke from California, but the smoke reports were low that week. It was actually a dust plume from the dry lakebed out past Fernley, pushed in by 30 mph gusts, which happens a few times every summer. I know because my uncle flies a small plane out of Stead and he sent me photos from 6,000 feet showing the dust line clear as day against the mountains. The haze thins out by evening once the wind dies, and you can see the whole Sierra again. Does anyone else track this stuff, or am I the only one who checks the wind before blaming a fire?
