I tried to ask my neighbor about his lawn sprinkler system and things got weird

Last week, I saw him out there and asked a simple question about his timer settings, and he launched into a 45-minute story about water pressure, city codes, and his cousin's failed koi pond. I just wanted to know if I should water in the morning or evening. Has anyone else had a simple 'ask anything' moment spiral into a full lecture?
