Kept 4 gallons of old paint instead of buying a $45 can and I dodged a bullet

I kept 4 gallons of leftover paint from when we bought the house in 2019 because throwing it out felt wrong, and last month I finally tested a spot on the shed. The can I saved matched the siding perfectly, while the $45 gallon I bought at the hardware store in Salem came out two shades off even though the label said the same code. Has anyone else had better luck with old paint than new, or did I just get lucky?
