My friend told me to just ask for what I want in a job interview
I was nervous about a big interview last week, and my friend said to just be direct and ask for the salary I wanted. I did, and they offered me exactly that number, $85,000. Has anyone else had a simple piece of advice work out that well?

Yeah, I got my last job by just asking too, though @leeshah is right that it's a total gamble.

My uncle tried that same advice in 2019. He asked for ninety grand at a small tech startup. The hiring manager laughed and ended the interview early. It really depends on the company culture and how badly they need you. A big corporate place with set budgets might play ball. A founder who thinks they're doing you a favor won't. It's not a strategy, it's a dice roll.

Just ask for what you want" is a huge gamble though. That can totally backfire depending on the company.
