My neighbor asked me a question about my job I couldn't answer
I was talking to my neighbor, Mark, yesterday and he asked me what I actually do all day as a freelance writer. I mean, I just said 'I write stuff,' but then he asked who reads it and why they should care. It made me realize I've never really thought about who my work helps. Has anyone else had a simple question make you rethink your whole job?

Actually, that web copy example is spot on. It's not always about a direct reader, it's about the business owner who needs those words to work. @lopez.quinn gets it, moving to tech writing means your work directly helps someone follow a manual or fix their own stuff. The value is in the problem you solve with the writing.

That's a good point from your neighbor, but I see it a bit different. The value isn't always about a direct reader. Sometimes you're writing web copy that helps a small business owner finally explain their service clearly to customers. That's who you're helping.
