My plumber told me to smell my drains and now I get it

Last Tuesday in Phoenix, a guy fixing my garbage disposal said to sniff the sink overflow hole and if it smells like damp socks, the trap is dry and sewer gas is backing up. I checked it, gagged, and realized he was right after I poured a cup of water down and the smell vanished overnight. Has anyone else had a tradesperson point out something so obvious that you felt like an idiot for not noticing for 3 years?
