My uncle told me to just ask for the manager when my flight got canceled in Denver.

I did it and got put on a standby list with 40 people ahead of me. Spent 6 hours in the airport eating overpriced pretzels. What's the actual move when an airline screws you over?

Yeah, that standby list is a trap. I had a flight canceled in Chicago last year. The real move is to get on your phone and call the airline's help line while you're standing in the customer service line. You'll often get rebooked faster through the person on the phone. Also, check the app for alternate routes yourself. I got myself on a flight through a different city by finding it in the app and then calling to confirm.

Totally agree about calling while in line. I read a travel blog that said the same thing, because phone agents can see all open seats across the whole system at once. The person at the gate counter is often just dealing with the chaos right in front of them. Did you have to wait on hold for a long time when you called?

That standby list trick from dianaanderson saved me in Denver once.
