Overheard a barista say 'asking better questions is the whole job' and it hit weird

I was grabbing coffee last Tuesday at a shop in Portland and this older guy at the counter was clearly new to the area. He asked the barista for the best roast, and instead of giving a quick answer she asked him three questions back. Sweet or dark, hot or iced, and what he usually adds. Then she picked one and said that line about asking better questions. It sounded so simple but I thought about it all day. Like, how many times do I give advice or answer stuff without actually digging into what someone needs first? I do that with my own friends constantly. I answer the question they asked, not the one they're actually stuck on. It made me wonder, do you all catch yourself doing this too? And do you have a go-to question you ask before you give any kind of answer or opinion?
