Overheard my neighbor say he never checks his tire pressure

Last Saturday at the gas station on Route 9, a guy next to me told his kid that air in tires is just a dealership scam. I didn't say anything, but I checked mine and two were at 28 PSI instead of 35. That's a 4 psi drop, and I've been driving 30 miles a day for work in this heat. Underinflated tires wear out faster and can blow out on the highway, especially in July. I bought a $12 gauge from the AutoZone down the street and now I check every other fill up. Has anyone else caught someone spreading bad car advice like that, and did you bother correcting them or just walk away?

Man, that reminds me of my buddy Dave who swore his truck got better gas mileage with low tires because "less rubber hits the road." Drove on them like that for a year before one shredded on the interstate, cost him way more than a gauge ever would.
