Picked the rental house near downtown instead of the quiet suburb, and I was dead wrong.
I was set on the suburb because I thought I needed space and quiet. My cousin convinced me to try the downtown house for 3 months since it was cheaper. After 6 weeks I can walk to work in 15 minutes and I spend $40 less on gas each week. The street noise took some getting used to but honestly I don't even notice it now. Anyone else surprise themselves by choosing the opposite of what they thought they wanted?

That "I spend $40 less on gas each week" really hits home for me. After twenty years in the suburbs with a half hour commute each way, I moved to a little apartment closer to town and it changed everything. I was dead set against it at first because I thought I needed a yard and quiet streets, but now I walk to the grocery store and my favorite diner. The savings on car maintenance alone has been a pleasant surprise. Funny how we can be so sure about what we need until life proves us wrong.

After twenty years in the suburbs with a half hour commute each way" - see, that's the thing. You had twenty years of that lifestyle and it worked for you. Some people actually want a yard and quiet streets. I get that walking to the diner sounds nice, but what happens when you want to host a barbecue or let your kids run around without bothering neighbors? Dollar savings don't mean much if you're crammed in a box with no privacy. Not everyone was wrong about what they needed.
