Shoutout to my neighbor Stan for the compost tip
Stan saw me tossing watermelon rinds in the trash last Tuesday. He said "put em in a bucket with brown leaves and stop wasting money on bagged soil." Why do I never think to ask old guys about simple stuff like this?

Tbh I had a neighbor like that once, but it was about fixing a leaky faucet. He showed me how to replace the washer and I saved like 40 bucks on a plumber. Now I ask old guys everything. One time I asked this retired mechanic about my car making a noise and he said it was just a loose heat shield. Saved me a trip to the shop. It's weird how we don't think to just ask people who've been around for decades. They've seen every problem and know the cheap fix for it.

My uncle spent 45 years as an electrician and his advice is always "call a pro" because he's seen too many DIY jobs catch fire or flood basements. Last month I tried fixing my own garbage disposal after watching a YouTube tutorial and ended up flooding my kitchen and needing a new unit anyway. That 40 bucks you saved on the faucet would've been nothing compared to the 300 I dropped on a replacement disposal plus my deductible for the water damage. Sometimes the cheap fix just masks a bigger problem and you end up paying way more later. Not every old guy knows what they're talking about either, my buddy's grandpa told him to dump sugar in his gas tank to "clean the injectors" and it ruined his engine.

@hannah_perry you're braver than me, I tried replacing a washer once and ended up with a water feature in my basement (and not the fancy kind).
