Shoutout to the cashier who told me my dog was about to eat a poisonous mushroom

Was at Home Depot last Saturday with my golden retriever. This older cashier named Frank stopped me and pointed at some mushrooms growing near the garden section. He said "your pup is gonna grab one of those in 2 seconds." I looked down and sure enough she was sniffing them. Told me they were death caps or something similar and a bite could shut down her liver. I never even noticed them. Has anyone else had random strangers save them from a mistake like that?

oh man the thing that gets me is no one's mentioning how this is getting worse because of climate change too. i was reading that death caps are showing up in places they never used to be because the weather patterns are shifting. like warmer wetter falls in areas that used to stay dry are letting them spread way beyond the west coast now. so even if you think you're safe because you live in like the midwest or something, that might not be true anymore. and the scary part is they look just like the normal edible mushrooms people forage for, so it's not just dogs at risk.

Hold up are death caps really that common outside of like the Pacific Northwest though?

Yeah "hold up are death caps really that common" is kind of the thing I wondered too. I saw a post from a mycology group where someone in Texas found them growing in their own backyard, which caught me off guard. Guess they're more widespread than people realize, especially since they can get mixed in with other mushrooms.
