Shoutout to the guy who asked me about my worst day on a job site
That got me thinking about a Tuesday in Phoenix last summer, where the temperature hit 115 degrees. I was helping a buddy with a simple deck repair, but we found a huge section of dry rot under the railings. The whole job went from a two-hour fix to a full day of demo in that insane heat. We went through a whole case of water and had to stop every twenty minutes just to cool down in the truck. What made it stand out, besides the heat, was that the homeowner came out with a big pitcher of iced tea and just said, 'You guys are nuts, please don't pass out on my property.' It was so bad it was almost funny. Has anyone else had a simple job blow up into a marathon because of one surprise problem?

Ever think a small job can't go that wrong? I used to, but @patricia558 is right, those surprise problems really do turn a day upside down. Finding a whole hidden mess changes everything in a heartbeat.

Patricia558 knows how it is. Had a simple fence post replacement last month. Ground looked fine until we hit solid rock a foot down. Whole afternoon shot right there. Client started freaking out about the extra cost. Those hidden issues turn a two hour job into a two day fight. Makes you want to just walk away sometimes.

Oh man, that story is SO real. I gotta say though, calling Phoenix heat "insane" is almost selling it short, that place is a whole other level of brutal. It's awesome the homeowner brought out that tea, sometimes that little bit of kindness is what gets you through. Those surprise problems that turn a quick job into a marathon are the absolute worst.
