The 3AM diner in Bakersfield that flipped my opinion on truck stop food

I used to swear all truck stop food was garbage, but last month I stopped at this place off the 99, the Rusty Spur. Got their meatloaf special for $9.50 and it was genuinely better than half the sit-down restaurants I hit on my route. The cook told me she's been there 14 years and makes the gravy from scratch every morning. Has anyone else found a random spot that totally changed their rule about a category like that?

Meatloaf special for $9.50" sounds like a trap honestly. I've been burned way too many times by places that look cute and homestyle but are just microwaving Sysco stuff and calling it scratch made. The whole "truck stop food is hidden gem" thing is survivorship bias, you remember the one decent meal and forget the 50 other times you got rubber eggs and cold toast. Plus that cook bragging about 14 years there ain't a flex, it means she's probably stuck and the place is coasting on regulars who dont know better. Most of those diners off the 99 are just reheated sadness with a country music playlist. You got lucky once, that's it. I'll keep my standards low and my expectations lower, that way I'm never disappointed.
