Warning: I spent 3 years thinking my 'ask anything' approach was fine, but last week a client in Dayton asked me to detail her antique china cabinet and I realized I should have asked way more questions first.

I just assumed 'clean everything' meant the usual dusting and polishing, not the 4-hour process of hand-washing 60 individual pieces of porcelain with a specific pH-neutral soap she had in her garage, which she only mentioned after I'd already started with my regular spray.

Imagine having the special soap in the garage the whole time.

That part about the special soap being in the garage gets me. Did she just forget to tell you, or was she waiting to see what you'd use first? I've had clients do that, test you with little things. What else did she not mention? Were there rules about the order you washed them in, or how to dry them? Those jobs always have hidden steps.

Probably a test. The hidden steps are the real job.
