Borrowed a friend's tracking mount for one night and it changed how I shoot the Milky Way
I've been taking landscape astro shots with just a tripod for years around Joshua Tree. Last month I borrowed a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer from my buddy and got a 3 minute exposure of the core that was tack sharp. The detail in the dust lanes blew me away compared to my usual 15 second shots. Has anyone else had that moment where gear actually unlocked something new?

That first tracked 3 minute shot of the Lagoon Nebula made my 15 second tripod frames look like phone snaps.

Oh come on @king.robin, stacking 50 frames still beats one tracked shot for noise reduction every time.

Wait, so you're telling me I've been torturing myself with 15 second exposures and stacking 50 frames for years when I could have just borrowed a friend's mount and gotten the same result in one shot? That's a cruel joke, man. I mean, I'm happy for you and all, but now I feel like I've been living in the dark ages with my tripod while you've been cruising in a sports car. idk, maybe it's just me but that first tracked shot is like seeing the Milky Way with glasses for the first time. Makes all those years of fighting star trails feel like a weird hazing ritual. I guess I need to find better friends with better gear.
