Some guy on Flickr tore apart my Jupiter photo
I posted my best Jupiter shot from my 8 inch dob. Someone commented the image was too soft. Said I was focusing wrong. I always just twisted the knob til it looked sharp. Turns out using a Bahtinov mask makes a huge difference. First try after that trick and I actually saw the Great Red Spot. You guys use masks or just eyeball it?

Bracketing focus shots works way better than even a mask for planetary stuff.

Wait, you actually think bracketing works better than a mask? I used to swear by those Bahtinov masks for everything but after trying bracketing on Jupiter last month I found it way easier to get those tiny details sharp. The mask was always fiddly in bad seeing but bracketing just let me snap a bunch and pick the best one later. It's a game changer for sure, especially when the atmosphere is unstable.
