Spent a week processing the same Orion shot with my old free software and then with PixInsight...
The free program left all my stars looking like bloated, colored blobs, but PixInsight's background extraction and deconvolution tools actually gave me sharp, natural points of light for the first time, so is there any decent free alternative that doesn't wreck star shapes?

Ugh, that star bloat is the worst. Been there with free software, it's so frustrating when you put in all that time.

Honestly, is star bloat that big a deal in the final image? Most people looking at your Orion shot just see the cool nebula, not if each star is a perfect tiny dot. The free software gets you 90% there for zero dollars. Spending a week tweaking sounds like more of a hobby perfectionism thing than the software actually wrecking the photo.

Funny, I've always felt like messy stars make the whole image look cheap, even if the nebula is nice. It's like having a great painting in a busted frame.
