That stranger at the observatory changed how I shoot the moon

Last month I was at the Griffith Park observatory with my new 8-inch Dobsonian, trying to get a clean shot of the full moon. This older guy noticed me fiddling with the focus knob and just walked over, no intro, and said 'you're chasing sharpness, not shadow.' He showed me his phone, a basic stacked image he'd taken with a $200 scope, and pointed out the terminator line, said that's where the detail lives. I spent the next 45 minutes shooting the edge instead of the center, and the craters just popped in a way I never got before. Has anyone else had a random passerby give them a tip that totally flipped their technique?
