Tried shooting Orion with a 30 second exposure and got a sky full of streaks
Last week I finally got a clear night in Tucson so I pointed my old Canon at Orion with a 30 second exposure on a fixed tripod. I figured 30 seconds would be fine, but the stars came out as little dashes, not dots. I checked the back of the camera and every single star was dragged. Turns out the Earth spins more than I thought in that time. I dropped it to 10 seconds and got sharp points but the nebula was barely there. Now I'm stuck between short and noisy or long and streaky. What exposure time do you all use for wide shots before the trails show up?
