Used to stack my telescope shots with free software, now I pay every year for PixInsight and I miss the old days

Yeah a buddy of mine went back to DeepSkyStacker and never looked back.

Does anyone else feel like these subscription software companies are just bleeding us dry? I remember when you bought a piece of software and it was yours. Now it's like you're renting it forever and they keep jacking up the price. I get that PixInsight is powerful and has tons of features, but sometimes I wonder if all those features are really worth paying for every single year. I've heard a few people say they switched back to DeepSkyStacker for stacking and just use GIMP for the rest, and their images still look great. Maybe the old free stuff was already good enough for most of us, and the paid stuff is just for the super hardcore folks. I really miss when things were simple and you didn't have to worry about a yearly bill just to process your photos.

The thing about DeepSkyStacker is it handles the basics just fine for most people. GIMP with some plugins can do a surprising amount of heavy lifting for free. I think a lot of folks just get caught up in the hype around PixInsight and forget that your final image depends way more on your data and technique than which piece of software you used to process it.
