Warning: Your phone screen makes nebulae look like cotton candy and it is not your fault
I shot the Orion Nebula from my backyard in Boise back in 2019 and again 3 weeks ago, and the difference in what my old DSLR showed versus what my phone app displays blew my mind. People keep posting phone shots of the Pleiades and calling them faint blue wisps, but that is just how the screen renders it. Real nebulae have structure, dust lanes, and a kind of grainy depth that no filter slider can fake. I know this because I stacked 40 frames at 30 seconds each and compared them side by side with a single phone snap. Has anyone else noticed phone processing is quietly rewriting what beginners think deep sky objects actually look like?

Wait, am I the only one who spent like an hour trying to edit my phone pic of the Orion Nebula before realizing the actual photo was fine and my screen was just lying? I genuinely thought I was doing something wrong for months, like maybe my focus was off or my lens was dirty. Wild that it took a whole stacked image for me to figure out my phone just makes everything look soft and pink.
