A guy at the junk yard made me rethink my whole paint matching approach

Saturday I was pulling a fender off a wrecked Camry for a customer and the yard guy walks over, watches me for a minute, says 'you know you can't trust the code on the sticker, right?' I told him I've been doing this for 8 years, always use the code. He showed me a door panel where the factory tag said one color but the actual paint under the trim was clearly a shade lighter. Turns out they do mid-year production tweaks all the time. I've been burning $40 a pop on test cards that were already wrong from the start. Do any of you match by eye against the car itself before you even pull up the formula, or am I the last guy still trusting the sticker?
