Bought a cheap paint thickness gauge online for $80, it was off by 30 microns on every test panel.

A body shop guy told me those cheap ones are only good for a rough idea. You really need to spend more for something that can be trusted for accurate readings. It's a case of getting what you pay for.

Wait, 30 microns off on every single test? That's not a rough idea, that's just plain wrong! At that point you might as well just guess by looking at the paint. I get that tools can have a small margin of error, but being consistently off by that much means the readings are useless. You bought a gauge to measure something, not to get random numbers. That's honestly kind of scary if someone tried to use that for real work.

That's a huge error, and @stellanelson is right, it makes the tool useless.
