DAE regret buying the $90 stud welder instead of renting one for that quarter panel job

I picked up a cheap stud welder from the local parts store in Toledo for about $90 thinking I'd use it on every job. Used it twice, and both times the pins pulled through the metal because the amps were all over the place. A buddy told me to just rent a good one for $25 a day when I actually need it, and now it sits on the shelf collecting dust. Anyone else got a tool they bought that just didn't earn its keep in the bay?
