Found out something wild about paint booth filters today

Ngl I was just looking up specs for my booth and found out that a standard intake filter catches about 95% of particles down to 1 micron. But the pre filters most shops use only grab like half of that. I read it on the Donaldson site when I was ordering new ones. Has anyone else checked their filter ratings or do you just grab whatever fits?

That bit about "pushing dirty air through the booth" really hits home. I read somewhere that a lot of shops don't realize their filter efficiency drops way before the thing looks dirty, so you end up with a lot of recirculated overspray.

You read it on the Donaldson site" - yeah I used to be the guy that just grabbed whatever filters were cheapest and called it good. Honestly I always figured a filter was a filter and the numbers were just marketing fluff. But after seeing this and doing some digging on my own I gotta admit I was wrong. The difference between a pre filter catching half the junk versus the main one catching 95% is way bigger than I thought. Makes me wonder how many times I was basically just pushing dirty air through the booth because I cheaped out. I already ordered better ones for my next swap.

Pre filters catching half and the main catching 95% is a bigger gap than I ever thought about. Cheap ones probably just let all the junk through and ruin a paint job down the line. I'm switching my stuff out next week to be safe.
